UPM sponsored Two Sides gives a great environmental story for paper and print

HELSINKI, Sept. 14, 2009 (Press Release) -

A UPM sponsored initiative was launched today as part of campaign to promote the sustainability of print and paper as 'Renewable, Recyclable and Powerful'.

Two Sides has been formed to promote paper and prints great environmental story and power to communicate. More than 100 companies and associations from across the graphic communications supply chain are involved in the campaign in the UK. The core feature of the initiative is 'Myth Busting' about claims made about paper which are wholly inaccurate.

Key messages include:

The Two Sides organisation aims to reach more than 20,000 media specifiers over the next 12 months by sending them an information pack on the campaign and its objectives. As well as direct mail promotion the initiative will also target online audiences as well as editorially through UK publisher Haymarket's PrintWeek, Marketing, Campaign and Brand Republic titles.

"Our aim is to start to change perceptions about the production and use of print and paper", explains Martyn Eustace, Two Sides Director. "We're determined to see that print and paper remains an essential part of today's media mix. The initiative is designed to wake people up to the fact that print and paper is a powerful and sustainable medium and encourage them to visit the Two Sides web site to discover even more so they can make informed decisions about the best medium for their communication programmes. We are starting in the UK and plans are already underway to spread the initiative across the rest of Europe."

To help demonstrate UPM's sustainable credentials further, the Company is supporting a competition in which the winners will be able to see sustainable paper manufacturing in action. UPM's prize includes a visit to UPM Caledonian, the UK's only LWC paper mill. Guests will see the paper mill, its new combined heat power plant as well as visit a local forestry.

UPM's Two Sides representatives are Mr John Sanderson, director for global environmental market support, and Mrs Martina Schurmann, marketing manager Paper Business Group.

John Sanderson comments: "The Two Sides initiative is a valuable addition to improving our understanding of sustainable paper consumption and one which matches UPM's approach and outlook. There is a clear need for a balanced view on this topic."

He adds: "As the front-runner of the new forest industry, UPM is committed to sustainable paper production and clearly demonstrates this through environmental best practice and continuous improvement."
